Abstract
The author considers the novel Cien años de soledad as an imperishable work thanks to its artistic uniqueness. Beyond the commonplaces of magic realism, she maintains that this uniqueness focuses on the tragic dimension that Gabriel García Márquez achieves. As a result, she launches unexpected thematic links, such as violence, with examples from the most recent Colombian and Latin American narrative. The analysis concludes by examining madness as a fictional device to avert the fateful character of the human relations raised in the novel.
