Abstract
This study addresses the management and utilization of sludge generated at the Cusco WWTP (Wastewater Treatment Plant) within the context of the water crisis and the need for sustainable solutions. The main objective was to describe the current sludge management practices and their potential agricultural use, in line with environmental regulations and circular economy principles. The research was conducted in Cusco, a region where the reuse of wastewater and by-products is still limited, despite the urgency to strengthen sanitation infrastructure. The results show that treated sludge can be transformed into valuable resources such as compost or fertilizers, improving soil fertility and reducing dependence on chemical fertilizers. However, technical and regulatory challenges persist, hindering its comprehensive use. It is concluded that sludge valorization is feasible and beneficial, but requires investments, regulatory updates, and increased awareness among involved stakeholders.
