Abstract

A low-cost clay catalyst for the hydrodemetallization (HDM) of a heavy oil from the Orinoco Oil Belt was prepared and characterized. The influence of some pretreatment parameters on the activity was also studied. It was shown that acidity affects more the HDM than the removal of free iron oxides.
