Abstract

The structure of modern representative democracyis based in two liberal traditions: First, assumes thedemocracy like a counter–majority system whichobjective is to protect the rights and the equalityunder law. Second, conceives democracy like a system of pacific disputefor the power between elites and political parties, without directparticipation of people. The modern representative democracy has beenchallenged by Marxism’s struggle against inequality of classes, feminist’sstruggle against inequality of gender, and the citizen demands for politicalparticipation and equity.
