Abstract
This article examines the scientific studies of Jorge Tadeo Lozano between 1800 and 1816 as a window through which to explore some elements in the formation of a creole identity at the start of the Independence movement. The principal source to reconstruct Lozano’s scientific practice is his Fauna cundinamarquesa. The analysis of Lozano’s scientific practice, especially his work on zoology, is a way to examine some aspects of the Independence movement by demonstrating the relations between the construction of knowledge in the specific conditions of the periphery and the recognition of a nascent Creole identity, which are fundamental to be able to understand the later process of constructing a national identity.
