Abstract

Bamboo is a lignocelulosic material that presents little strength to decay by biological organisms like fungi and insects, especially because of its high content of starch which is the food main source for most organisms. Useful life – span of bamboo increases with preservation treatments; among them, traditional and chemical ones. Benefits obtained in bamboo protection by traditional methods are still doubtful, so research is recommended. Concerning chemical methods, the easier ones should be considered as an alternative. It is evident that much is left to do in bamboo preservation field and its acceptance by population, especially in our country, where bamboo utilization culture does not exist, these practices are totally unkown or in many cases, underesteemed.
