Abstract
Introduction: Periodontal disease is an inflammatory process that affects the supporting tissues of the tooth due to the presence of microorganisms. The medicinal plants are used as an alternative treatment for the control of this disease due to its therapeutic properties. An updated revision in the Spanish language and with a greater number of plants is required; therefore, this study aims to describe the use of medicinal plants for the treatment of periodontal disease based on a systematic review of the literature. Methodology: The electronic search was performed using the information sources: Medline through PubMed; electronic libraries: SciELO, Virtual Health Library, Cochrane Library, academic Google academic search engine, and the Jacobo Calanche Library of the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Los Andes. Clinical trials and systematic reviews were included. Results: In the 55 studies it was found that the plants are effective for the treatment of periodontal disease, being numerous studies for gingivitis. Conclusion: According to the analyzed evidence, medicinal plants are a good alternative for the treatment of periodontal disease.
