Abstract

Introduction: Oral health education and prevention is a challenge and one of the necessary approaches to improve health in Chile and around the world. This can be even more challenging when treating patients with special needs such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, with communication difficulties, sensorimotor deficits, restrictive and repetitive interests. As pediatric dentists, we must be able to correctly use all the available tools to overcome these challenges. Thus, new technologies have been developed to facilitate the promotion of oral health. The objective is to describe the use of audiovisual tools in oral health education and prevention. Case Report: A 9 years 4 months old patient with general biological risk (non-verbal Autism Spectrum Disorder), Frankl 2, early mixed dentition, with caries activity, and high cariogenic risk, deft 8, gingivitis induced by biofilm, and onychophagia. Treatment focused on acquiring preventive measures using technology in conjunction with a dedicated adaptation to achieve rehabilitation with maintenance of good oral habits. At the Universidad de los Andes, educational capsules were created with different topics in prevention, such as oral hygiene instruction: brushing and dental floss, diet advice and the importance of eliminating bad oral habits. Conclusions:  Successful treatment includes oral rehabilitation, and the development of favorable habits that allow to maintain oral health and prevent disease. Behavior management, multidisciplinary treatment and family support are of upmost importance. Tools such as technology can be used as a complement to dental treatment.
