Los protagonistas de la novela griega, indefensos en muchas ocasiones ante poderosos enemigos, recurren a menudo al engano de aquellos que atentan contra su vida o buscan imponerles su voluntad. Se desarrolla asi una retorica persuasiva, fundada en la presentacion de un ethos confiable del hablante, en el conocimiento del estado de animo del sujeto de poder (los pathe del oyente), y en la verosimilitud de la argumentacion (las tres pruebas aristotelicas). El proposito de este articulo es el analisis de las estrategias de manipulacion- de acuerdo con la teoria de la semiotica discursiva -empleadas por las protagonistas en Las aventuras de Quereas y Calirroe de Cariton de Afrodisia y en Las Etiopicas de Heliodoro de Emesa, ademas de una breve comparacion con Las aventuras de Leucipa y Clitofonte de Aquiles Tacio. Abstract Analysis of the Persuasive Strategies in the Greek Novel The main characters of the Greek Love Novel, defenseless in many occasions in front of powerful enemies, employ deceit against those who make attempts against their lives or attempt to subdue their wills. A persuasive rhetoric is deveeloped, based on the construction of a trustworthy ethos of the speaker, in the knowledge of the pathe of the hearer and in the plausibility of argumentation (the three Aristotelian proofs). This article tries to analyze the strategies of manipulation- considered from the perspective of the discoursive semioticsutilized by the heroines in Chariton Aphrodisiensis The adventures of Chereas and Calirhoe and in The Aethiopian Story of Heliodorus of Emesa, including a brief comparison with The adventures of Leukippe and Clitophon of Achiles Tatius. David Konstan y las emociones en el mundo antiguo.

Sin duda, en el campo de los estudios de la Antiguedad clasica de estos ultimos anos, David Konstan es uno de los mas reconocidos investigadores, con numerosisimas publicaciones, entre ellas libros con los cuales ha marcado pautas sobre temas no siempre adecuadamente profundizados, como la novela de amor griega, en Sexual Symmetry: Love in Ancient Novel and Related Genres. El proposito de este articulo es ofrecer un panorama de sus producciones mas recientes, en un campo por el cual, desde distintas opticas se ha incrementado el interes: el universo emocional o pasional humano. Nuestra intencion es destacar los aportes mas significativos de D. Konstan en varios articulos y en el libro Pity transformed, cuyos temas son las emociones en el mundo antiguo, partiendo de las definiciones de la Retorica de Aristoteles. Abstract Without a doubt, in the field of the studies of the classic Antiquity of these last years, David Konstan of is one of the most recognized investigators, with a profusions of works, among them books with which he has set models on subjects not always suitably deepened, like the Greek novel of love, in Sexual Symmetry:Love in Ancient Novel and Related Genres. This paper intents to offer a survey of his more recent productions, in a field by which, from different views the interest has been increased: the emotional or passional universe of human beings. Our intention is to emphasize the most significant contributions of D. Konstan in several recent articles and in the book Pity transformed, whose subjects are the emotions in the ancient world, starting from the definitions and analysis of the Aristotle´s Rhetoric.

A partir de la aceptacion de que el termino griego philia indica una amplia gama de relaciones afectivas, ademas de la “amistad” en sentido estricto, se analizan en el Hipolito de Euripides los conflictos desencadenados entre los sujetos de las distintas formas de interrelacion, especialmente los referidos al campo del objeto (tophileton) cuya posesion los “amigos” desean para el otro. La interaccion subjetiva se estudia en base a las definiciones aristotelicas contenidas en los tratados de Etica y Retorica. Abstract With the acceptance that the greek term philia indicates a very wide range of affective relationships, besides friendship in a strict sense, in Euripides' Hypolite the conflicts unchained by the subjects in the different forms of interrelation are analysed, specially those referred to the area of the object (to phileton), whose possession friends desire for the other. Based upon the Aristotelic definitions of the Ethic and Rhetoric treaties, the subjective interaction is studied.

La reivindicación de la oratoria epidíctica: Pernot y la retórica del elogio.

El proposito de este articulo es presentar los aportes realizados por Laurent Pernot en el campo de la oratoria epidictica, genero que, a partir de la division aristotelica, ha suscitado controversias relativas a su desvinculacion de los intereses politicos. En tanto que actualmente los estudiosos han reivindicado la funcion institucional del epitafio y el panegirico, Pernot se concentra en el elogio, al cual atribuye una importante contribucion en la vida social y cultural de la epoca imperial. Starting from the Aristotelian division of the three kinds of rhetoric and the relegation of epideictic oratory from political issues, several critics had vindicated the institutional functions of the epitaphios and panegyric discourses. The purpose of this paper is to comment the contribution of Laurent Pernot about the development and sociocultural functions of the encomium during the Imperial epoch. La revalorización de Caritón de Afrodisias: La crítica actual de la novela de Caritón

Tomando en cuenta la revalorizacion y el interes de los estudiosos por la ficcion en prosallamada “novela ideal de amor” griega, este articulo intenta enfocarse en un grupo de obras recientes que se ocupan particularmente de Cariton de Afrodisia, autor de Quereas yCalirroe a fin de exponer y discutir las nuevas perspectivas que ofrecen. Los libros que seran objeto de nuestro analisis son en particular, Chariton de Aphrodisias and theInvention of the Greek Love Novel de Stefan Tilg y en forma mas general, Narrative andIdentity in the Ancient Greek Novel de Tim Whitmarsch y Greek Identity and the Athenianpast in Chariton: The Romance of Empire de Steve D. Smith. Ellos presentan en comun,entre otras cuestiones previamente estudiadas por la critica, por un lado, la relevancia de losproblemas concernientes a la teoria o poetica narrativa y, por otro, la importancia de la configuracion de la identidad de los protagonistas en el contexto socio politico-cultural del que forman parte. The Revaluation Oo Chatiton of Aphrodisias: The Most Recent Critical Studies on Chariton Abstract Starting from the new interest about the Greek Novel in the recent years, this paper intentsto analize the works dedicated to Chariton of Aphrodisias: in particular, Chariton de Aphrodisias and the Invention of the Greek Love Novel by Stefan Tilg and in a moregeneral way, Narrative and Identity in the Ancient Greek Novel by Tim Whitmarsch andGreek Identity and the Athenian past in Chariton: The Romance of Empire by Steve by D.Smith). The purpose is to underline and discuss the novelties introduced by these authors,who have some common aspects, namely, 1) the question about narrative and originalityand 2) the relevance of the identity configuration of the principal protagonists within thesocio political and cultural context of the fictional world.

El objetivo de este articulo es senalar, dentro de los mas recientes estudios publicados sobre retorica, las principales lineas novedosas que se encuentran en un aporte significativo en el proceso de esclarecimiento de la constitucion de la teoria retorica y de su funcion fundamental en la larga tradicion de esta disciplina. Me refiero al libro de David Timmerman y Edward Schiappa Classical Greek Rhetorical Theory and The Disciplining of Discourse, del cual intentare destacar la relacion, propuesta por los autores, entre los denominados “terminos de arte” y la funcion que desempenan en una comunidad dada para la comprension de un area especifica del conocimiento. Abstract New approaches to an ancient ars This paper intends to present an overview of a recent and important book on the field of the rhetoric: Classical Greek Rhetorical Theory and The Disciplining of Discourse of D. La intencion del presente articulo se inscribe en un campo de la retorica que ha cobrado relevancia en los ultimos anos: las relaciones entre retorica y religion, especialmente aquellas concernientes al estudio de los discursos relacionados con la evangelizacion del Nuevo Mundo y la confrontacion entre una retorica apegada a los canones clasicos frente a otra alejada de ellos. La persistencia de los modelos de la retorica clasica, no solo a nivel de la expresion, sino del contenido, constituye una via profunda de indagacion en cuanto que permiten descubrir las raices que plasmaron la identidad y la vision del mundo en el Nuevo Continente, desde su descubrimiento. Si bien el texto que me propongo analizar es tardio, la ocasion de su exposicion esta enmarcada dentro del topico de la evangelizacion, pues se trata de la oratio funebris pronunciada por el Arzobispo de Potosi, Ignacio Montes de Oca, durante la celebracion del Primer Concilio Plenario de Obispos de America Latina, en 1899, en elogio de los obispos difuntos desde el Descubrimiento de America, contenida en las Acta et Decreta Concilli Plenarii in Urbe celebrati Anno Domini MDCCCIX. La extensa pieza oratoria se ajusta perfectamente a los topicos del discurso epidictico, en particular a los establecidos para el elogio. A traves de un analisis de la “oratio”, me propongo demostrar: 1) la persistencia de los modelos retoricos clasicos en la estructura y expresion formal; pero mas notablemente: 2) la transformacion conceptual del discurso, en el cual el mensaje espiritual queda casi sofocado por los aspectos que privilegian el caracter socio-cultural de la obra evangelizadora vista a imagen de una conquista de la civilizacion sobre la barbarie. Colonizacion y conquista Abstract Retoric, Religion and Colonization This article is founded in two fields of the rhetoric´study that had been stressed during the last years: a) the relationships between rhetoric and religion and b) more specially, the analysis of the discourses related with the evangelization of the New World and the confrontation between the forms of classical rhetoric and new canons for the transmision of the Christian message. Undoubtely the classic rhetorical rules have a continuos tradition whose research alows to find the sources of the identidity and vision of the New World from the Discovery of America. In this paper I will analyze the rhetoric in a specific testimony: the “oratio funebris” given during the Plenary Council of Latin American Bishops in 1899. I have chosen Acta et Decreta Concilli Plenarii in Urbe celebrati Anno Domini MDCCCIX, and from that book the “oratio funebris” given by the Bishop of Potosi, Ignacio Montes de Oca, during the solemn funeral held to honor deceased Bishops. Given that the speaker wants to praise all Bishops since the Discovery of America, this extensive speech fits perfectly into the topics of the epideictic discourse, specifically to the eulogy. Through an analysis of the “oratio” I will intent to prove: 1) the permanence of the classic models of rhetoric in formal structure and expression: and, more importantly, 2) the conceptual transformation of discourse, in which the spiritual message is almost adumbrated because the importance of the socio-cultural works are prominent and evangelization is seen as a conquest of civilization over savagery .
